如果不是因为美国科学院外籍院士的选举结果,恐怕很少有人会去关注李爱珍这位老太太。美国华盛顿当地时间2007年5月1日,美国国家科学院公布了本年度增选的72名院士和18名外籍院士名单。中国科学院上海徽系统与信息技术所研究员李爱珍成为第一位获得美国科学院外籍院士荣誉的中国女科学家。迄今我国内地共有11人当选美国科学院外籍院士,李爱珍是唯一没有国内院士头衔的。于是,这位当选美国院士的“非中国院士”自然引起了媒体和公众的广泛关注。对于这一点,李爱珍通过媒体表达了自己的两层想法:“第一,没有国家创造的平台、项目经费、科研环境等各项支持就不会有我的今天;第二,我非常感谢那些推荐我的院士,对他们我感到非常愧疚。”
