The latest findings by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Biotherapeutics Inc. support the notion that interleukin-2 (IL-2) is an effective drug for the treatment of advanced refractory cancers. These studies basically confirmed that they were initially widely publicized and had some controversial results at the end of 1985. Two groups used IL-2 to activate leukocytes in patients to produce lymphokine-activated killer cells (LAKs). LAK cells were then reintroduced into patients with a range of advanced cancers and developed resistance to conventional treatments.
