US “New Scientist” May 3, 1979 Page 358 Report: At present, although tuberculosis is well controlled by drug treatment, it is unclear how pathogenic Mycobacterium tuberculosis evades the host defense mechanism. Recently, J. J. Ellner and T. M. Daniel from the Cleveland University Hospital in Ohio have isolated a substance from Mycobacterium tuberculosis that inhibits the response of immunocompetent cells (ie, lymphocytes) in human leukocytes. The isolated material, called Arabi-nomannan, is a major component of the cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and can be prepared from M. tuberculosis cultures by affinity chromatography. Hernandez and Daniel used various immunological methods to demonstrate that the target cells for inhibition are the white blood cells of macrophages. they
