现代著名作家沈从文对绘画与文学的关系有着浓厚的兴趣。他从中国传统绘画艺术特点中领悟和发现了小说与绘画的相似相通。沈从文说:“中国传统绘画是人格化的艺术,注重抒写主体的人格、情趣,表现自灵的最微妙的活动”。沈从文重点谈绘画的文章是《艺术教育》,载于1937年1月《国闻周报》第14卷第5期,署名炯之,初收《文集》第12卷。这篇文章只分析了绘画艺术的现状与提出建议,没有触及绘画的特质,倒是在其它几篇没有重点谈绘画的文章中,沈从文总结了他从绘画中得到的体会。沈从文多次提到宋人小画对自己的启发。譬如他从宋人画小景的意境营造联想到小说意境的塑造:“故事……一切教导都溶化于事件‘叙述’和‘发展’两者中。这个发现又让我从宋人画小景中,也得到相似默契与印证。或满幅不见空处,或一角见相而大部
