The most memorable part of my decades-long study career is when I was a young man educated in the countryside, eagerly reading a book of “banned books” under a lamp of beans like kerosene on a long winter night, Han fluttering to bread ... It was a suffocating era of cultural despotism, in addition to the four volumes of the mandarin, all other literary and historical books were almost derogated from as “sealed capital to fix” poisonous weeds, which were banned. In the winter of 1968, I went to Wannan Shanxiang to jump in the queue. Only one old ivory box, except for a few pieces of clothes, was the book. The novel series of Lu Xun, Red and Black, “How Steel Is Made,” “Pushkin Lyric Poetry,” “Lermontov’s Poetry Selection,” “History of Russian Literature,” ... and a thin “Briarwood” . They are my spiritual food, my closest friend.
