The rapid development of the Internet brought challenges to the protection of copyright. In this respect, WIPO concluded WIPO Copyright Treaty and WIPO Performance and Phonograms Treaty in December 1996. In October 1998, the United States enacted Digital Millennium Copyright Act. In June 2000, Council of the European Union passed Amended Proposal for a Directive on the Harmonization of Certain Aspects of Copyright and Related Rights in the Information Society. Japan also amended its copyright law in June 1997, and June 1999. On the basis of the treaties and legislatures above, especially Digital Millennium Copyright Act, this article discusses the right to communicate the copyrighted works to the public, the protection of technical measures, the protection of rights management information, the remedies for the infringement of copyright and violation of technical measures and right management information, and the fair use in the Internet.
