I. INTRODUCTION In the 1964 Niigata earthquake, the permanent displacement of mantle caused by liquefaction caused severe damage to the pile foundations of many bridges and buildings. A detailed field investigation of the failure status of the pile foundation and the corresponding soil profile was carried out, and some researches were conducted to simulate the response of the pile foundation under lateral displacement and its failure mechanism.
