Beginning in the thirteenth century, North India began to be subjected to long-term rule by foreign nations such as Turkey and Afghanistan. The various genres of the original court temple paintings, but also all gone. Those Hindu royal patrons who had preserved the surviving and later cultural traditions of the era were almost completely eliminated. In East India, the majestic Buddhist temples were similarly damaged by anti-idol Muslim invaders. The delicate and elegant style that originated from the classical art of Ajanta and its complete written illustrations of the Baltic dynasty was preserved only by the natural barrier in the Himalayas.
