We have already learned these basic principles: (1) It is possible to predict their properties from the structural formulas of organic compounds; (2) The physical properties are determined by their own functional groups, carbon frameworks and the way they are linked. And (3) the chemical nature is mainly determined by the functional groups, and the manner in which the carbon framework is linked does not play a role. In this unit we will see one maner of connection-conjugation-modifies the propeties. A second intent of this unit is to refine these principles in the following aspects. Studies of a large variety of compounds show that the properties of a class of compounds are not exactly determined by their usual structural formulas
