传统的视频通讯都是构筑在用户自己的私有网络上的,这种应用的好处是视频和音频能够保证很好的效果,但是由于只能内部进行视频沟通,无法与其他的通讯设备互连互通,而且网络的维护成本较高,所以这种应用仅仅是大的政府机构和企业能够选择的。而针对一些中小企业和高端个人用户, 由于应用和费用的限制,他们现在还无法享受到视频通讯所能带来的好处。与此同时,由于工作和生活的需要,他们又有进行可视通讯的需求。因此在公共网络上的视频应用就会有很大的市场前景。现在由于技术的发展,随着 H．264和MPEG4等诸多标准的商业应用,现在已经能够在公共网络上实现非常清晰的图像和声音了。
