According to the latest statistics provided by Shanghai’s industry and commerce department, in 2002, private enterprises in Shanghai grew at an average rate of 185 “born” per day, of which 38 large enterprises had registered capital of more than 100 million yuan. According to statistics, as of the end of 2002, the total number of private enterprises in Shanghai has reached 224,000, and employs more than 2.5 million people. Private companies are playing their role in the emerging modern service industries such as real estate, mediation, conventions and exhibitions, tourism, and logistics. Private capital invests in municipal key infrastructure and public welfare activities.
