A new map shows the distribution patterns of mud, sand, and mud, sand, gravel, rock and coral seabed in western Indonesia. This is based on 33,000 markers of sediment provided by sketches of sea-going surveyors in several maritime countries by means of rover soundings prior to 1930. The figure reveals the distribution of remnant sands, modern mud, many bedrock outcrops on the shelf, and large coral reefs that become marginal dams. Because the sediment distribution maps out the range of bedrock outcrops and adjacent sand, it is instructive for exploration of tin deposits. Since the muddy area is delineated, it is also of value in the geophysical prospecting of oil and natural gas because in continuous Earthquake reflection measurements in the shady material than other types of submarine material interference.
