四楞豆又称翼豆,原产东南亚热带雨林区,是豆科具块根的多年生藤生植物。在支撑条件下,可攀缘到3～4m高,荚有四楞、带翼状边缘,长6～36cm,每荚5～20粒种子。它根系发达,有根瘤可固氮。 四楞豆富含优质蛋白质、油脂、维生素等营养物质,叶子、花、鲜荚可做蔬菜,味如蘑菇,种子可直接炒食,味似花生,也可加工豆腐制品。块根可食,形似马铃薯,含蛋白质12％～15％,是马铃薯的5倍,是木薯的10倍。 一般亩产嫩荚800kg,种籽100～125kg。若留种,豆荚呈深褐色,种籽呈黄褐色,形状方圆,表皮光滑时,即可分次采收。严霜来临前收获块根,一般亩产175～200kg。地下块茎一般一棵一年产鲜薯0.5～1.0kg,两年生2.5kg左右。不收薯块的,留下老藤,只要培土防冻,第二年开春基部仍能抽芽生枝,开花结荚,产量比头一年还高,如此可以连续收获多年不衰。
