Eco-linguistics is a newly emerging interdisciplinary formed by the combination of ecology and linguistics. It mainly studies the interaction between language and environment. In the late 18th century, scholars began to think about the relationship between language, thinking and the world around them. In the 1970s, Haugen pioneered the paradigm of linguistic ecology of “ecological metaphors.” In the 1990s, Halliday pioneered another paradigm for ecological linguistics - ecocriticism linguistics and explores the impact and function of language in solving ecological problems. This essay summarizes eco-linguistics in terms of its theoretical origin, development status, research content and research methods, with a view to more scholars paying attention to this field and promoting the harmonious development of the relationship between language and environment.
