Infrared passive systems can be divided into two broad categories: (1) scanning systems such as search, tracking and imaging; (2) measuring systems such as spectrometers, radiometers and interferometers. The scanning system scans and samples the distribution of the radiation intensity within a specified field of view. The output can be a linear analog signal of this distribution for imaging purposes, or it can only indicate the presence and location of the target, as in search-tracking applications. The measurement system measures the radiation incident on the system.
