据《史记·殷本纪》记载,殷纣王“使师涓作新淫声,北里之舞,靡靡之乐。”师涓是我国古代有名的乐舞艺术家,他奏了“清商流征涤角之音”献给纣王。纣王听后很不中意。师涓知道纣王是个好色之徒,于是就作了“北里之舞,靡靡之乐。”纣王对此倍加称赞,高兴至极。这里所说的“北里之舞”,是一种淫荡的舞蹈;“靡靡之乐”,就是充满庸俗趣味的音乐。从此以后,人们就把那些颓废淫荡,萎靡不振的音乐称为“靡靡之音”。
