含氯漂白剂包括氯、次氯酸盐和二氧化氯。由于氯和次氯酸盐来源丰富、价格低廉,漂白效率较高,漂白成本较低,一直是纸浆漂白的主要化学品。直至二十世纪八十年代,由于漂白废水中有害有机氯化物的发现,氯和次氯酸盐的使用逐渐受到限制,而且整个制浆用水非常多,这种严重污染环境,资源浪费巨大的漂白方式根本不适应可持续发展的要求。
