Introduction Soil-structure interactions have a considerable influence on the dynamic response of large-volume structures such as nuclear power plant buildings and gravity tower offshore platforms supported on medium-hard and soft-soil foundations. In order to study this phenomenon, considerable efforts have been made in the past. However, it is mainly due to the three-dimensional and semi-infinite properties of the soil medium and the complexity of the actual structure.
