Citrus orchards in the hilly and mountainous areas of Hubei Province generally have such problems as barren soil, acid, stickiness, poor structure, drought tolerance, low yield, unstable yield and easy decline after they are rich. In the 1960s, many techniques such as digging big holes (or trenches), applying large fat and young orange groves and expanding soil to make holes and so on were popularized. However, there are few researches on the improvement of adult gardens. To this end, we conducted a series of experiments on small areas and large-scale demonstration for five consecutive years from 1977 to 1981 to study the effects of soil improvement and fertilization on citrus orchards in low-yielding adults or post-high-yielding decline.
