不论手工研磨或机械研磨,都可分成湿研与干研两种。所谓湿研法是在研磨擦动面间,加以多量研磨削与研磨液的混合物;所以被研磨之工作物在研磨具上运动时,研磨削的粒子可以产生圆滑转动。干研法虽然也使用研磨削与研磨液,然研磨粒子仅均匀分怖于磨具上,并不转动;因此研磨削粒子发生切削作用与磨损现象。在一般研磨工作中,由于湿磨较干磨速度约大6至8倍,所以开始先用湿研法研磨至适当尺寸,然后用干研法来决定最后尺寸和表面光洁度。通常各种金属在干研时,由于研磨方法与各种条件,研具表面呈现淡黄色或茶褐色,此即表示研具已被烧损。此种烧损面的色泽甚淡,肉眼往往不能看出。
