is a study of how the geographical distribu-tion of words can contribute to etymological research.Traditional etymological dic-tionaries are generally confined to cognate words, and research into etymological bor-rowings has usually been concerned with how one language borrowed words or otherlinguistic elements from other languages or how it contributed words or other lin-guistic elements to other languages.Few,if any, works have tried to show how a word,or words, denoting a concept spread across language families in different parts of the world. This is a wholly new field of endeavor.Drawing charts for one hundred orso basic terms would be very useful, and this article is one step towards this goal.
