我曾于五十年代中期至六十年代中期在贵州省做过十年的省委书记。这期间有幸每年都能见到毛主席,参加他亲自召开的省、市委书记会议,时间多则一月,少则半月,地点除北京以外,有时在北戴河,有时在上海或成都、武汉、庐山……总之,与毛主席的接触较多。往事历历,涌上心头,非常怀念他老人家。我已过了八十岁了,如今也老了,和我同时代的人,都是在毛主席谆谆教诲和亲切关怀下成长起来的,他的革命哲学思想、理论,伟人的气质和革命精神永远活在我们的心中。 前些时候,贵州赤水市为纪念毛主席百岁诞辰,要我在他们办的诗刊上题诗。我不会作旧体诗,但我始终敬仰毛主席对中国革命所作出的伟大贡献。因此,我还是题了一首诗,用诗来抒发我的感情,而顾不得七言诗的格律:

I will not make old-style poetry, but I have always admired Chairman Mao’s great contribution to the Chinese revolution. Therefore, I still wrote a poem, with poetry to express my feelings, and refused to take the seven-character poem:
