回溯七十年代中叶,经“拨乱反正”之后,戏曲艺术获得了第二次解放,研究、编撰地方剧种史的任务,再次提到工作日程上来。当时,中国戏剧出版社为适应新形势发展的需要,决定出版一套《中国戏曲剧种史丛书》,至1983年,又在秦皇岛召开一次中国戏曲剧种史写作会议,再次倡导、推动,并到我省约稿。此后,全国有评剧、粤剧、昆剧、京剧等多部剧种史相继问世。这时,我省正全力投入《中国戏曲志·福建卷》的编纂工作,未能完成写史计划;至志书告成,又错过了有利时机。
