This article studies the selectivity of various ion exchange resins to Au (CN) ~-_2 and other metal cyanides. By comparing the experimental results with the resin structure, the factors that control the selectivity were determined. It is concluded that the hydrophilicity and ionic density (number of ionic groups per unit volume) of the polymer matrix play an important role in determining resin selectivity. Low hydrophilicity and low ionic density increase the selectivity to gold, but rather, favor the adsorption of base metals such as iron and copper. Resins with triethylammonium groups are superior to polyvalent ions (copper and iron) for selectivity to monovalent and divalent metal cyanide conjugates (gold, nickel and zinc).
