竹芋是美丽的室内观叶盆栽花卉,为竹芋科多年生常绿草本植物,株高20cm～28cm,大多数品种地下具根茎或块茎,叶单生,较大,叶脉羽状排列,二列,全缘。花为两性,常生于苞片中,排列成穗状、头状、疏散的圆锥状花序,或花序单独由根茎抽出,果为蒴果、浆果。竹芋科植物品种较繁多,多数原产于热带、亚热带地区,喜温暖、多湿和半阴环境,适生温为18℃～28℃,在气候较为温暖的地区可布置花坛等园林景观或庭院栽培观赏,其它地区多作盆栽观赏,用于布置商场、宾馆、会议室、会客厅等大型公共场所或居家的客厅、书房、卧室摆设等处。
