Long-term total plasma T 4 and TSH assays have been used to monitor hormone therapy in children with hypothyroidism, but their results often conflict. Previous studies of plasma total T 4 and TSH values in children with hypothyroidism did not reveal a correlation between the two hormone levels or only a weak correlation (r = -0.23).
