将美国当代小说名家安.比蒂的小说《刻画维尔》置于后现代消费社会的现实语境下进行解读,认为其核心主题之一是揭示当代社会中家庭、婚姻、事业、亲子等种种相互交错的关系。具体从三方面来探讨:与维尔毫无血缘关系的养父麦尔才是其真正意义上的父/母亲;合格的父/母亲需要尽力维护家庭中的理解与交流,理解并满足孩子深层次的心理需求;在竞争激烈的后现代社会中,抚育孩子的天然母性与追求个人成功的事业心之间存在着尖锐的矛盾冲突。这一主题不仅具有深刻的现实意义,也典型体现了以安.比蒂为代表的美国简约派新现实主义小说的本质特征。
