Dr. Waler asks: Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) did not list pregnant women or other family members as contraindications to children’s use of chickenpox in their recommendations for the use of varicella vaccine (Meriva Pharmaceuticals Varivax). However, the product brochure states that vacci- nation should avoid close contact with pregnant women. In addition, unlike AAP’s advice, the package insert states that vaccinators should avoid close contact with immunocompromised patients and newborns. What is the basis for the above inconsistencies and what should be given under these circumstances?
