The U.S. Department of Defense is expected to implement the Tomahawk missile modernization program this autumn aimed at enhancing the flexibility and responsiveness of the weapon. The Tomahawk improvement plan focused on technical improvements to the weapon system, including the use of warheads with penetrating reinforcement targets and a new guidance system. This improvement plan can also facilitate the retrofit of existing anti-ship Tomahawk missiles and will produce 1,700 new missiles. The project was tendered this autumn and a contracting contract was signed in the spring of 1994 with a four-year project development phase. Tomahawk’s current producer, McDonnell Douglas and Hughes Missile Systems, will compete on the contract.
