The PINCH project is a library and community center located in Shuanghe Village, Yunnan Province. It is part of the planning and reconstruction of the local government after the September 2012 earthquake. The design spans a 4m high retaining wall connecting the rebuilt village with the newly renovated square. The building not only provided the villagers with a rooftop playground and a library, but also set a landmark for the local community with commemorative significance. The curves of the ridges evolved from 17 wooden trusses of different shapes, creating a unique reading space under the roof. Indoors, the truss extends down to support the suspended bookshelf. Instead of rejecting the wooden structure like most of the post-disaster reconstruction units, this project has re-presented contemporary wood structures.
