Since the late 1980s, the growth level of global energy consumption (excluding the former Soviet Union) has approached the growth rate of global GDP. Oil demand growth is strong. In 1994, oil demand outside the former Soviet Union increased by 3.2%, of which the growth rate in Asia reached 6%. Most of the increase in oil demand is met by the supply of non-OPEC oil-producing countries. The extensive application of major new technologies and management methods has laid the foundation for many non-OPEC countries to increase production and reduce development costs. The reduction in oil production in the former Soviet Union was offset by the decline in its oil consumption, which did not have a real impact on the world oil market. In areas outside the former Soviet Union, other primary energy consumption changes in 1994 were: natural gas growth of 2.9%, coal growth of 2%, nuclear power growth of 3.5%, and hydropower reduction of 0.2%. The growth rate of energy trade exceeds the growth rate of energy consumption and it is expected that this trend will continue.
