Objective To investigate the difference and relationship between plasma homocysteine (Hcy), folic acid and vitamin B12 in patients with acute cerebral infarction and healthy subjects. Methods The serum levels of Hcy, folate and vitamin B12 in 102 patients with acute cerebral infarction and 72 healthy controls were analyzed. Results Compared with healthy control group, Hcy 〔(65.88 ± 13.81) vs (24.40 ± 1.53) μmol / L, P <0.01〕, vitamin B12 〔(162.06 ± 10.99) vs (270.07 ± 20.81〕 pg / 0.01〕 levels, the differences were statistically significant. There was no significant difference in folic acid levels between the two groups (P> 0.05). Conclusion High Hcy is an important risk factor for acute cerebral infarction. There was no significant correlation between folic acid level and Hcy level. The level of vitamin B12 decreased with the increase of Hcy level. Supplementation of vitamin B12 may be the key factor to reduce Hcy.
