Long before it took the coveted Jury Grand Prix award at the 55th Berlin Film Festival last month, Gu Changwei’s “Peacock” has been hailed by many critics as “an epic depicting the inner world of the Chinese.” Local media reported that Beijing-based writer Wang Shuo described the renowned cinematographer’s directorial debut “Peacock” as “the swan song of the Fifth Generation” after he watched it at a close-door test screening early this year. Tian Zhuangzhuang, a Fifth Generation director, says “Peacock’’ is one of the two best movies of 2004, with Lu Chuan’s ”Kekexili: Mountain Patrol.“ And now it is reported that Gu, with a silver bear award in hand, is targeting at next year’s Academy Awards.
