For millions of years, plants have undergone a complex process whereby the root system ingests the elements necessary for metabolism from groundwater, soil and rock. Although gold is not a major element in plants, it can be taken up by plants and obviously enriched. Plant ash usually contains gold 5-15ppb, and recent research found. Gold content in the branches and leaves of alder up to 231 000ppb. Different plant species and cell tissue types also have different abilities to absorb, transport and enrich trace elements. Several plants can store elements that are generally considered toxic, making them highly enriched, such as fir fir shoots containing arsenic up to thousands of ppm, and Siberian birch ash containing up to 300 000 ppb.
