Esophageal Acid Test Esophageal Acid Sensitivity An effective esophageal acid test (APT) is a test method for testing esophageal acid sensitivity. In gastroesophageal reflux disease, most APTs are replaced by those obtained from 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring. These include the symptom index (SI), the symptom-sensitive index (SSI), and the symptom-associated probability (SAP). To evaluate the role of APT in patients with GERD, King et al. Conducted a clinical study comparing the outcomes of SI, SSI, and SAP in APT-negative and -positive patients. The study found that in APT-positive patients these indicators are higher than those in negative patients, and APT-negative patients generally do not have symptoms due to acid reflux. The researchers therefore proposed that APT may be effective in asymptomatic patients in 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring (DigDisSci, 2005, 50: 1611-1615).
