舍生取义1942年5月25日凌晨,数万日军精锐部队将八路军总部包围于辽县麻田以东的南艾铺一带。被包围的还有:野战政治部、后勤部、北方局及其党校、新华日报社等机关数千人。敌人很快发现了目标,敌机开始疯狂地扫射投弹,很多同志中弹牺牲。彭德怀、左权立即召开了简短会议,果断决定分路突围、各自为战。左权坚决要求由自己担任掩护和断后,及带领总直机关、北方局机关及北方局党校突围的重任。于是,彭总率部向西北,野战政治部主任罗瑞卿率部向东南,总后勤部长杨立三率部向北,各路人马立即行动。撤退时,总部警卫连要护送左权先走,被他一口拒绝了。他说:
