我考入西安美院油画系时,武德祖老师已是全国知名的油画家。他待人热情诚恳,特别热爱学生,我们班不少同学常去老师家里观赏作品,聆听老师的教诲。 一天上午,我与王天德同学偶然看见武老师出外写生。征得老师的同意后,我们帮老师提着画具爬上了少陵塬,来到了长胜坊村口。在村口,一位农村姑娘正坐在一堆苞谷秆上沐浴着秋日的阳光,她身着紫红色的棉衣,头包草绿色的方形头巾,等待武老师作画。原来,老师经过精心地构思,作画的前一天已摆好了模特。 老师打开画箱开始工作。他的神思非常集中,口角上挂着微笑,激动的心情难以言表。他认真观察,仔细调色、迅速涂抹,经过了近三个小时的紧张创作,画布上巳涂满了油彩。整幅画面强烈的阳光感、明快的色彩、精巧的用笔使我们大饱眼福。停笔后,他说:“这就是习作的第一天要求,要尽可能把应画的颜色全画上,不对的地方刮去,保持画布上留有一个感觉就行了。头部最好一次画完。刮的工作到室内作,因为一幅画始终是让人在室内看的。到家里,可以用笔或用手把有些部分改一改,以便达到在阳光下模特给你的总体印象”。

He carefully observed, carefully graded, quickly applied, after nearly three hours of intense writing, the canvas has been painted with oil.
