据东京大学农学系教授桥本周久、鸿巢章二最近的研究成果报导,他们从三年前开始养殖的毒性最大的品种——星点东方鲀,在养殖的约400条鱼中没有检查出一条带毒的鱼。同时同一研究小组对河豚食的饵料进行调查研究,发现广泛分布在西日本海岸的小型卷贝体中含有同河豚毒素相似的物质,并查明这种物质存在河豚的卵巢中。因此认为河豚的毒素是通过它的食物链蓄积在体内的。
