Plasma concentrations of vitamin C in the elderly are low, especially in older residents who have been hospitalized for long periods of time, but it is not known to what extent the intake is low enough to reduce plasma concentrations. The authors examined the relationship between vitamin C intake and plasma concentrations in elderly women living at home and in long-term hospitalizations. Methods and Results The authors studied 101 elderly women, 24 of whom were healthy women (average 74 years) living at home and 77 were long-term hospital (geriatric and psychiatric hospitals) patients (mean age 83 years). Older women weighing and recording food intake in the hospital are 5 days and older women living at home are 7 days old. Vitamin C intake is calculated based on the standard food ingredient table and the plasma vitamin C concentration is determined for each subject after the intake measurement is completed.
