In North America, hydropower industry has a solid strength. US hydropower stations supply 13% of the country’s electricity. Including conventional and pumped storage installations, while Canada receives 60% of its electricity from hydropower plants. US hydropower is characterized by: building on well-distributed existing projects, upgrading the engineering grade of each successive runoff river, and developing new ones. In 1990, 32 non-federal projects were put into commercial operation, providing a generating capacity of 613,000 kW. These projects exemplify the diversity of the modern hydropower industry. Its 50kW micro-electric unit, which is owned by a single Maine family
