雷峰塔遗址(图一)位于西湖南岸,在南屏山的支脉夕照山东侧,距净慈寺60多米。雷峰塔未倒时,曾与西湖北岸宝石山上的保俶塔遥相呼应。1924年9月25日雷峰塔倾圮。雷峰塔遗址犹如一座小山包,平面呈椭圆形,长径60米,短径45米,比地面高出9-11米。 2000年2月-2001年4月,为配合雷峰塔重建工程,在国家文物局及浙江省文物局具体指导下,由浙江省文物考古研究所主持,对雷峰塔遗址及地宫进行了考古
