天然碱是一种含90％以上Na2CO3和NaHCO3的矿物质。间歇驱替试验表明，天然碱辅助热水驱油对Athabasca沥青的特性曲线与采用Na2CO3时相似。相同采收率时，天然碱的剂量为NaOH的3～4倍，但由于其价格低，很可能成为热水驱中NaOH的替代品。
Trona is a mineral containing more than 90% Na2CO3 and NaHCO3. Intermittent displacement tests showed that the characteristic curve of trona-assisted hot water flooding on Athabasca bitumen was similar to that of Na2CO3. The same recovery, trona dosage of NaOH 3 to 4 times, but because of its low price, it is likely to become hot water flooding NaOH substitute.
