《淮南子》是以道家思想为主调,杂取儒、法、兵、墨等诸家言论,故而此书既反儒,又拥儒,还有中和儒、道两家的主张,显得比较复杂。就其反儒言论来看,《淮南子》批判儒学的力度还是很大的。刘安和他的宾客们认为儒学是大道沦丧之物,为衰世所造;儒学是一曲之学,并非治道之本;儒学背离人的性命之情,是舍本逐末;儒学顽固守旧,不能与推移。《淮南子》批儒具有特殊的时代意义,显示了学术独立的可贵,同时也宣告了一个学术时代的终结。

Liu An and his guests think that Confucianism is the lost thing of the Boulevard, made for the decline of the world; Confucianism is a song of study, not the root of the rule; Confucianism deviates from the human life affection, is the way to the end; Confucianism is stubborn, can not be Passing. Confucianism criticism of Huai Nanzi has the special significance of the times, shows the valuable of academic independence, and at the same time proclaims the end of an academic era.
