植物在正常生命活动中,需要许多矿质元素,其中需要量极少者,如Cu,Mn,Zn,B,Mo等,谓之微量元素。因为植物对它们的需要量极微,土壤栽培方法就很难使其发生缺乏症,甚至用一般的水培也不易达到目的,因此必须採用特殊的水培技术。主要是注意培养器皿的选择及培养基的纯化。在这方面研究较早的是Steinberg(1919),他用吸附的方法,把培养基中几乎所有的Zn都除去,培养Aspergillus niger,结果证明加Zn的培养基中生长的乾重大於对照的2000倍。後来Stout和Arnon提出了极其精细的方法来纯化培养溶液,用以培养高等植物,结果证明Cu,Zn,Mn,B等都是高等植物生长所必需的。他们用Pyrex
