Mandatory requirements for automatic identification systems installed on board may come into effect in mid-2000. Depending on the international rules under discussion, the installation of automatic AIS or transponder systems may be a requirement of the Solas Convention. This proposal received extensive support at the meeting of the Subcommittee on Navigation Safety held in London on the last day of September 9 last year.
