Hemingway once wrote that courage is in danger. However, I prefer the view of the Italian dramatist Vitolio Alfieri of the 18th century: “The test of courage is often not death, but living.” Being afflicted with cancer causes not only pain but also fear. It is courage to live a sick life and dare to face up to this reality. Hope is our most effective “drug” for the treatment of cancer. Almost no cancer (no matter what stage of development) can not be cured. By embedding hope into the heart of a patient, we can help him establish the concept of a positive fight against illness. Perhaps the remark is illogical and rhetorical, is it? Many doctors, however, believe that to be effective therapies must be part of the treatment of cancer.
