7月21日出版的美国《科学》杂志,发表了中科院南京地质古生物研究所研究员金玉玕等人的一项研究成果,他们对浙江省长兴县煤山的古生物资料进行严密的置信区间分析和计算机模拟,结合碳同位素比值骤降和微球粒急增等证据,提出古生代与中生代之交的生物大灭绝为爆发性,动摇了分期绝灭的传统观点。这种集古生物学、数学和计算机科学为一体,以此来克服化石记录的缺陷所造成的种种偏差,探索其真实内涵的方法,是古生物研究中的全新领域。这次大绝灭与恐龙大绝灭的相似点也愈来愈多,说明可能受超大规模火山喷发、地外物体撞击等突发性因素驱动。这对于破解超级生物大绝灭之谜有重要意义。
