Brittle coating method (referred to as brittle lacquer method) is one of the experimental methods of stress analysis. It is with the optional paint, spray or brush on the surface of the component under test, after drying to form a layer of thin film attached to the surface. As the components deform, the friable lacquer layer gradually cracks, the fissure first beginning at the maximum strain and then spreading over the entire lacquer layer of the component. The order and distribution of densities that appear from the fracture can show the stress on the surface of the component. Due to the lower tensile strength of the brittle coating, the crack is perpendicular to the first principal strain direction.
