For decades the government’s economic role has become indestructible. Questioning the proper allocation of public spending in the economy has become fashionable in recent years. Economic theorists are alarmingly silent on this issue, but perhaps economic history offers some clues. Economists have written a handful of articles that attempt to assess the benefits of government spending. This is one of the recent articles by V.Tanzi and L. Schuknecht, two economists at the International Monetary Fund. Their discovery contains some interesting content. Public spending by the government may be subject to diminishing marginal returns, beyond a certain limit, and it will cease to bring about modest social benefits.
