我国多数棉区当枯霜到来时,总有一部分棉桃来不及吐絮,其中一部分晚秋桃根本不能成熟。勉强成熟的霜后花品质也很差,使用价值低。有的地区由于棉花晚收又直接影响后茬作物(如小麦、油菜)的播种。因此,促进棉花早熟,对棉花的优质高产和提高复种指数有着重要作用。棉桃的成熟是靠自身产生的乙烯推动的一系列生理生化过程。人为地将乙烯利农药作为外源激素用在棉花上,能迅速被植株各器官吸收,在体内分解产生乙烯,能促进棉花早熟。1974年华北农大首先应用我厂生产的乙烯利进行棉花催熟试验获得初步成功,后
